Project Title: Identification of a Biological Signature for Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in HIV-Positive Patients
Project Abstract:
My proposed project will involve bioinformatic analysis of the gene expression patterns in HIV infected and non-infected patients with and without tuberculosis and control infections to identify the unique disease specific signature associated with tuberculosis. I will then undertake protein expression and cell-based studies to confirm the identity and roles of all candidate biomarkers. I will define the timings of release of key genes and biomarkers associated with tuberculosis. Those genes and proteins most characteristic and specific for tuberculosis will be developed as simple ELISA or RTPCR based methods for use in the diagnosis of tuberculosis in the context of HIV.
